Brazil’s Internet Data Security Regulations

In late 2013, the Brazilian Congress took steps to implement its first comprehensive internet and data protection regulations entitled Macro Civil da Internet. The Marco Civil da Internet would require explicit consumer consent for the collection and transfer of personal data, requiring data to remain within Brazil. Violators of the legislation may be fined up to 10% of local revenues and/or suspension of data collection activities in Brazil. Brazil has the largest economy in South America and is the seventh largest economy in the world; therefore successful legislative initiatives will have a cascading impact on the development of industry standards.
