Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (February 1, 2024) – Fort Lauderdale Partner Sean Shecter recently spoke with Legaltech News (part of Law.com) about how gen AI is impacting the practice of law and the overall structure of firms. The article titled, “We Asked Every Am Law 100 Law Firm How They're Using Gen AI. Here's What We Learned,” describes that firms are using gen AI for both legal and business purposes. While attorneys are using the technology to draft documents and to conduct research, firms’ business professionals are using it to prepare marketing materials and other content.
Mr. Shecter told Legaltech that gen AI may potentially impact the structure and performance of Am Law 100 firms. He predicted that the technology could erode the leverage model and profitability of firms that sit at the top of the Am Law ranking, while allowing other firms to handle a higher volume of client matters. “It will affect top 10 firms’ profits by taking [their] leverage model away,” he explained, adding, “Firms like mine might make up for that by taking in more cases.”
Mr. Shecter – a former federal prosecutor – serves as co-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Government Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice, as chair of its Supply Chain Due Diligence Practice, and as a member of its AI Task Force. In addition to having extensive experience defending clients in regulatory, white-collar criminal, and complex civil litigation matters, he is proficient in advising clients on emerging AI regulations and compliance issues.
