Sacramento, Calif. (July 1, 2024) – Sacramento Partner Shane Singh recently spoke with Super Lawyers magazine about his experiences working as a ball boy for the Sacramento Kings and as a manager for the California Golden Bears, as well as how these experiences informed his law practice.

As the article titled “Letter Perfect” explains, Mr. Singh has had an affinity for basketball since he was 11 years old and observed players on the Sacramento Kings sign autographs following a game that took place soon after the team moved from Kansas City to California’s capital. He described that his experience inspired him to seek a position with the team. He explained, “Part of the reason I’m a lawyer is I like writing and, back then, if you wanted to get something done, you’d write a letter. . . . I got an inkling to write the trainer, Bill Jones … that I’d love to be a ball kid, if that was possible.” Mr. Singh, the son of immigrants from the Fiji Islands, recalled, “On my first day, I’m kidding you not, Bill Russell showed me how to open the water cooler for this Summer League game. . . . I’m 14 years old and one of the hallmarks of the sport is training me!”

The article also describes that when Mr. Singh entered University of California, Berkley, he again wrote a letter seeking to be part of the school’s basketball team – the Golden Bears. “The first thing I did, I wrote a letter to the basketball coach at the time, Lou Campanelli,” he told Super Lawyers. According to Mr. Singh, a special connection with the godfather of one of the players – as opposed to his letter this time – helped him secure a job as a team manager, where he stayed for the next four years.

Mr. Singh also told Super Lawyers that he developed certain essential legal skills while working with the teams, noting, “Some of the skills I developed, in terms of communicating effectively and persuading people, are from when I was a manager. You had to just to get things done.” He further explained that although many people expected him to practice sports law, litigation appealed to him more. “After I started doing litigation, I found I loved it. I love taking depos. I love trying cases,” he described.

Mr. Singh is a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Labor & Employment Practice. He regularly handles a variety of matters across several industries and areas of law, including cases involving disability discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act, labor and employment issues, business litigation, business transactions, real estate, and bodily injury. His diverse client base includes national retailers, local businesses, and emerging companies.
