Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (September 6, 2024) - Fort Lauderdale Managing Partner Michael Platner recently spoke with Business Insider for an article titled, “6 Weird Indicators a Recession Could be Coming: Finance Experts,” which discusses factors suggesting that a recession may be on the horizon.

The article opens by explaining that although money managers and consumers are anticipating that a recession may be ahead, recessions remain “notoriously difficult” to predict. The article goes on to describe several “weird, wacky, and often imperfect harbingers of tough financial times.” These include lipstick sales, dating app usage, pawn shop activity, and business disputes.

On the topic of business disputes, Mr. Platner told Business Insider that turmoil arising in the middle-market may be a recession indicator. He explained that an uptick in private company insolvencies, partner fights, and business disputes could signal that a recession is ahead. “In hard times, it’s not uncommon for simmering partner issues to come to the top and for one partner to blame the other for not pulling their weight,” he described.

Mr. Platner serves as chair of Lewis Brisbois’ national Corporate Practice and co-chair of its Securities & Corporate Finance Practice. He works with clients to develop and execute business savvy legal strategies for businesses from an early stage through maturity, sale, and merger. In addition, he regularly leads “Going Liquid” workshops, which provide actionable advice to business owners who want to position their businesses successfully for growth, value creation, and ultimate liquidity events.
