Atlanta, Ga. (May 28, 2025) - A recent Law360 article highlighted legal efforts by Atlanta Partners Josh Curry and Jonathan Goins' client Microsoft to disrupt Lumma Stealer, a popular info-stealing malware.
Mr. Curry and Mr. Goins, along with co-counsel from Microsoft and Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, are representing the technology giant in a pending Georgia federal court case that aims to dismantle the infrastructure propping up malware Lumma, which is frequently used by cybercriminals to steal computer users' passwords, credit card and bank account information and cryptocurrency wallets.
U.S. District Judge Mark H. Cohen in the Northern District of Georgia unsealed the filings in the lawsuit on May 22. Among those documents was a court order in which Judge Cohen allowed Microsoft to seize and facilitate the "takedown, suspension and blocking of approximately 2,300 malicious domains that formed the backbone of Lumma's infrastructure," Steven Masada, Assistant General Counsel for Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit, wrote in a blog post concerning the case.
Microsoft's lawsuit coincides with actions against Lumma by the U.S. Department of Justice, which seized Lumma's central command structure and disrupted marketplaces where the malware was sold to cybercriminals, and the European Cybercrime Centre and Japan's Cybercrime Control Center, which also suspended locally-based Lumma infrastructure.
In a statement provided to Law360, Edvardas Šileris, head of Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, said the operation is "a clear example of how public-private partnerships are transforming the fight against cybercrime."
