Tom C. Cowan

Thomas C. Cowan is a partner in the New Orleans office of Lewis Brisbois and a member of the General Liability, Healthcare, and Long-Term Care Practices. He is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Texas.

For the last 20 years, Tom has focused on defending clients in medical malpractice and long-term care matters in state and federal court. As an experienced trial attorney, he successfully represents long-term care facilities, emergency medicine physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, internists, and other specialists against a range of claims.

In addition, Tom has drafted several bills in support of tort reform in the healthcare/long-term care industry and has provided related testimony before numerous legislative committees. He also has drafted by-laws for healthcare institutions and served as both counsel and mediator for hospitals regarding interdisciplinary disputes. Moreover, Tom is a thought leader and has lectured on various topics affecting the healthcare industry.

Prior to sharpening the focus of his practice, Tom handled matters across several areas of law, including maritime, products liability, aviation, professional liability, casualty, and transportation. Tom has had many jury trials defending healthcare providers throughout Texas and Louisiana in both rural and urban settings. He has tried cases in Sulphur Springs, Texas and Winnsboro, Louisiana as well as in Houston, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana. Tom began his legal career more than 45 years ago in the New Orleans District Attorney’s office, where he prosecuted more than 40 jury trials.
