John Thompson is an associate in the Baltimore office of Lewis Brisbois. Mr. Thompson’s practice focuses on civil litigation in the state and federal courts of the District of Columbia and Maryland. He counsels clients on matters related to general liability, professional liability, and malpractice defense.
Mr. Thompson has tried over 50 cases to verdict and is skilled in handling the defense of individuals and business entities in complex litigation, catastrophic losses, professional liability and malpractice claims, as well as actions involving contractual disputes, construction litigation, and premises liability claims. He has experience at all stages of trial and appellate practice in Maryland state courts, including pre- and post-appeal motion practice. Prior to joining Lewis Brisbois, he served as a judicial law clerk in the District Court of Maryland and began practicing law at a prominent local civil defense firm.
Mr. Thompson’s litigation experience includes the following representative matters:
- Successfully argued and defended an appeal of an order granting summary judgment on statute of limitations grounds in a nuisance and trespass property action between adjacent homeowners in Baltimore City. Jones v. Smith, 265 Md. App. 248, 334 A.3d 1179 (2025).
- Obtained summary judgment for a national telecommunications company in a multi-million-dollar lawsuit involving injuries caused by an underground explosion.
- Obtained summary judgment for a vehicle lessee in an action alleging severe injuries caused by a rental vehicle.
- Obtained summary judgment for an elevator company in an action alleging injuries caused by dangerous conditions from an unsafe elevator.
- Obtained dismissal of a negligence action against a recreational facility based on exculpatory provisions in the facility’s contract.
- Successfully obtained reversal of a trial court’s decision that had erroneously held that an auction company was negligent for failing to ensure strict compliance with Department of Transportation regulations and entering judgment without adequate proof of damages.
