Akron Team Speaks with Akron Legal News About Office Successes, Recent Expansion

Akron, Ohio (April 11, 2023) - Akron Managing Partner and Chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Tax Practice David Kern, with Partners John Hill, Michael Altvater, and John Conley, Associate Moriah Cheatham Williams, and Chair of Lewis Brisbois’ National Corporate Practice Michael Platner recently spoke with Akron Legal News for an article on the successes and growth of Lewis Brisbois’ Akron, Ohio office.

As the article, titled “Lewis Brisbois expands its Akron office” describes, the firm opened its third Ohio office (joining Lewis Brisbois' Cleveland and Cincinatti locations) in February 2020, at which time it had seven attorneys and one paralegal. Today, the location has nine attorneys, five support staff, and is currently doubling its physical footprint with a 6,000 square-foot expansion. The firm’s Akron-based attorneys primarily handle corporate and tax matters, as well as business transactions and business litigation.

Mr. Kern told Akron Legal News, “We are very excited about the support we are receiving from the firm. . . . We did not expect to grow as quickly as we have, but I think it’s a testament to the benefits that being part of the sixth largest U.S.-based law firm in the country can offer.” Mr. Hill further explained that the firm plans “to meld” its Akron and Cleveland offices together, “not physically – but from the perspective of creating a really strong northeast Ohio hub that serves clients of all kinds.”

Mr. Platner also described the success that the Akron office has seen over the last three years, noting, “David Kern and John Hill are world-class top-of-the-food-chain lawyers, well known in northeast Ohio for excellence and successfully taking on some of the most difficult cases. . . . We’re excited to bring the strength of our more than 1,700-lawyer platform to businesses and entrepreneurs in this thriving area and look forward to seeing David and John build up our Akron team over the coming years.”

In addition, Mr. Hill discussed the Akron attorneys’ enthusiasm surrounding the arrival of its newest attorneys – Mr. Altvater and Ms. Williams. “We are really excited to have both of them here,” he said. He added that Mr. Alvater, who “has a great reputation in the Akron and Summit County communities,” is “already proving to be a great fit here,” while Ms. Williams “is highly respected in Summit County.”

Mr. Alvater, likewise, explained that he has been happy with his move to Lewis Brisbois. “Joining a distinguished group of local attorneys with access to Lewis Brisbois' expansive national platform offers the perfect opportunity to deliver exceptional legal services to clients,” he said.

Similarly, Ms. Williams described that she has been pleased with how the firm has supported her recent life changes, including preparing to welcome her first baby, noting, “We’ve all heard stories about unsupportive law firms and partners but everyone at [Lewis Brisbois] has been wonderful and happy for my family.”

Furthermore, in describing the benefits of practicing in Lewis Brisbois’ Akron office since 2021, Mr. Conley told Akron Legal News, “[J]oining a firm with a truly national platform has put my practice on jet fuel. . . . I am able to serve my national clients in cases across the country with a breadth of resources and capabilities that really only firms the size of Lewis Brisbois can support.”
